EXPERIENCE ROTTERDAM FROM THE INSIDE

If you’ll like to see Rotterdam as much as possible during the Summer University week, then join one of the organised excursions and/or just walk through the neighbourhood of the congress location. Within walking distance there are lots of interesting architectural buildings to see or musea to visit, the Booijmans van Beuningen or the Kunsthal.

Organised excursions:

Tuesday 22 august                        

  • An 1,5 hour Walking tour in the Markthal Quarter - from 15.00
    The Markthal is so prominent in the historic inner city – as a building and as a concept- that nowadays, you can safely call it the markthal Quarter instead of Laurenskwartier. In this tour, our architectural guides will first take you through the Markthal. Where you’ll eperience the market floor, the roof terraces of the stands, Arno Coenen’s impressive artwork and last but nog least, the timestep of Rotterdam’s archeological department. During this time, the guide will take you into the mind of architect Winy Maas (MVRDV) about the urban areas. Thereafter the guide will give further explanation of the oterh redevelopment projects of the Markthal Quater.

  • A Harbour Tour (75 min) from 15.30
    Among the busy traffic of sea-going and inland ships, the trip is a special journey through one of the largest harbours in the world. You can see Rotterdam’s impressive skyline with its imposing buildings glide by, and then get a unique view of the harbours shipyards, docks and the hypermodern transshipping of thousands of containers. Last but not least the tour will end with a view of the steamship ‘Rotterdam’, the former cruise flagship of shipping company Holland America Line. An exciting 75 minutes with clear descriptions of everything you see.

Thursday 24 august

  • An 2 hours Bicycle tour in Downtown Rotterdam - from 15.00
    During this innercity tour, you’ll pedal straight through the beating heart of the city. The enthusiastic urbanGuides will tell you everything that makes this city fascinating. From the progressive architecture to  the melting pot of cultures to the turbulent history but also the many local initiatives that bring live to the city. Downtown Rotterdam is your short meeting with the only metropolis in the Netherlands. The Weena skyscrapers, the Meent’s boutiques, the toko’s dotted along the West-kruiskade, but also the international attractions such as the cube houses, the Markthal and Koolhaas’ newest addition ‘the Timmerhuis’, will all be featured in the 2 hours.

Visit a museum (non organised)

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (Museumpark 18 Rotterdam).

One of the oldest museums in the Netherlands. A visit to Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is a journey through the history of art. Dutch and European masterpieces provide a comprehensive survey of art from the early Middle Ages to the 21st century, from Bosch, Rembrandt and Van Gogh to Dali and Dutch Design.

Kunsthal Rotterdam (Westzeedijk 341 Rotterdam).  

The world-famous architect Rem Koolhaas designed the Kunsthal in conjunction with the project architect Fuminori Hoshino from the Rotterdam firm of architects OMA (Office for metropolitain Architecture). The Kunsthal is beside being an exhibition venue, as an entrance and gateway to the Museumpark the Kunsthal is also a traffic intersection and meeting place for various public flows. The ‘showcase’ that flanks the ramp can be seen as an exhibition space by passers-by outside the building and forms part of the public street in the daytime.
